Maxalt is a prescription medication used to treat migraine attacks in adults. It belongs to a class of drugs known as triptans, which work by narrowing the blood vessels around the brain. Maxalt also reduces substances in the body that can trigger headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms.
How is this medication used?
Maxalt is usually taken at the first sign of a migraine headache. If your symptoms improve after the first dose but return later, a second dose may be taken 2 hours after the first. Do not take more than 30 mg of Maxalt in a 24-hour period. The medication can be taken with or without food.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of Maxalt include dizziness, sleepiness, fatigue, nausea, and dry mouth. Serious side effects can include heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and serotonin syndrome. It's important to read the medication guide provided by your pharmacist before you start taking Maxalt and each time you get a refill.
What are the potential interactions?
Maxalt can interact with several types of medications including SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), SNRIs (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), MAO inhibitors, and other drugs that increase serotonin levels. Combining these medications with Maxalt can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, a rare but serious condition.
